Midterm Check-In
An honest look at where you are, and a plan to finish.
In BIO 243 around now
This is usually a catch-up and review stretch after Exam 2, before the nervous system chapters. The last day to withdraw with a W usually comes soon after midterm, so this is the week for honest, informed decisions.
The big idea
Halfway. Take stock without panic. Retake the Study Habits Self-Check and compare it with week 1. Look at your grades in Blackboard. Then ask: what is still possible, and what would it take?
If things are going well: great, keep the system running. If they are not, you have real options, and the worst option is to drift. Talk to your instructor during student hours, use SI and tutoring, and update your plan.
Withdrawing is sometimes the right call, and it is a decision, not a failure. But it can affect your GPA, financial aid and program timeline, so never decide alone. Talk with your instructor, your advisor and Financial Aid first.
A&P in action
Use the catch-up time well: the nervous system is next, and it builds on what you already know about cells. Review membrane transport and the sodium-potassium pump from Chapter 3 now. Action potentials will make much more sense if you remember that the pump keeps sodium high outside the cell and potassium high inside.
Smart AI move
AI can help you make a study plan from the topics you list. It should not be the one who decides whether you withdraw: that conversation belongs with your instructor, advisor and Financial Aid.
Check yourself
You are worried about your grade at midterm. What is the best first step?
- Stop going to class
- Talk to your instructor and advisor about options and a plan
- Wait and see how Exam 3 goes
- Ask AI if you should drop
Informed conversations with people who know your situation lead to better decisions.
Why should you talk to Financial Aid before withdrawing?
- They grade the course
- A withdrawal can affect aid eligibility
- They can change your grade
- They will withdraw you automatically
Dropping below certain credit loads or completion rates can affect aid, so check first.
