Plan Backward, Again

Exam 2 is coming. Use what Exam 1 taught you.

In BIO 243 around now

Exam 2 often lands around now and usually covers skin, bone, joints and muscle (Chapters 5, 6, 9 and 10). Muscle physiology is a big piece. You may also be starting nervous tissue (Chapter 12).

The big idea

You have done this once. Now do it better. Open your Exam Wrapper from week 6: what was your main miss type? Build this week's plan to fix exactly that.

Mix it up. Instead of studying skin all day Monday and bone all day Tuesday, interleave: a few questions on skin, then bone, then joints, then muscle. It feels harder, and that is the point. Mixing trains you to recognize which idea a question is really about, which is what the exam asks.

Keep your sleep, and keep your plan small enough to actually do.

A&P in action

An interleaved set might go: (1) Which layer of the epidermis has dividing cells? (stratum basale) (2) Which cell breaks down bone matrix? (osteoclast) (3) What type of joint is the elbow's hinge? (synovial, hinge) (4) What molecule releases the myosin head from actin? (ATP). Four chapters, four minutes.

Smart AI move

Ask AI for a mixed question set across skin, bone, joints and muscle, and ask it to explain why each wrong option is wrong. Check any surprising fact in OpenStax.

What is interleaving?

  1. Studying one topic until it is perfect before moving on
  2. Mixing different topics within a study session
  3. Studying with music
  4. Taking breaks every 10 minutes

Interleaving mixes topics, which trains you to tell them apart, just like an exam does.

Your Exam 1 wrapper shows most misses were "studied the wrong things." What should your Exam 2 plan add?

  1. More highlighting
  2. The Reading Guide and a question to your instructor about focus areas
  3. An all-nighter
  4. Nothing, it was bad luck

The Reading Guide and your instructor point you at what the exam actually covers.

Reflect

What did you do differently for Exam 2 than for Exam 1? Did it feel different?
