Week 10 of 15Stay steady

AI as a Tutor

Make AI quiz you, explain things another way, and check your thinking.

In BIO 243 around now

Nervous tissue (Chapter 12) usually starts around here: neurons, glia, resting membrane potential, action potentials and synapses. It is one of the hardest stretches of the course.

The big idea

Used well, AI can be a patient tutor at 2 a.m. Used badly, it does your thinking for you and you learn nothing, or it gets you into an academic integrity case. The difference is who does the thinking.

Good prompts make you work: "Quiz me on the phases of an action potential, one question at a time, and wait for my answer." "Explain graded potentials using an analogy for a nursing student." "Here is my explanation of saltatory conduction. What did I get wrong?"

And always check. AI predicts likely-sounding text. It can be confidently wrong about A&P, mix up similar terms, or invent sources. OpenStax and your notes win every disagreement.

A&P in action

A tutor prompt that works: "I am studying action potentials for A&P. Ask me one question at a time about depolarization, repolarization and the refractory period. If I am wrong, give me a hint before the answer." Then check: depolarization comes from voltage-gated sodium channels opening and sodium rushing in; repolarization from potassium leaving the cell.

Smart AI move

Rule 1: use AI as a tutor, not a ghostwriter. If the AI is writing what you will turn in, stop.

Check yourself

Which prompt uses AI as a tutor?

  1. "Answer my Guided Practice questions."
  2. "Quiz me on action potentials one question at a time and wait for my answer."
  3. "Write my CircleIn post about neurons."
  4. "Here are the quiz questions, solve them."

A tutor prompt makes you do the thinking. The others hand AI your graded work.

An AI says myelin speeds conduction because it adds more sodium channels along the whole axon. What should you do?

  1. Trust it
  2. Check OpenStax: myelin insulates, and the signal jumps between nodes of Ranvier
  3. Ask a different AI and pick the answer you like
  4. Put it in your notes

Always check against the textbook. Myelin insulates the axon; channels cluster at the nodes, and the signal jumps from node to node (saltatory conduction).

Reflect

How have you used AI so far this term? After this week, what will you do the same, and what will you change?
