Your exam is data. Use it to change what you do next.

In BIO 243 around now

Exam 1 grades come back about now, and the course moves through bone (Chapter 6) and joints (Chapter 9). It is the best time all term to change course, because Exam 2 is still weeks away.

The big idea

Whatever your score, the exam is the most useful feedback you will get all semester. Do not just look at the number. Sort every miss into a type: I did not know it; I knew it but misread the question; I ran out of time; I studied the wrong things.

Each type has a different fix. Did not know it: more self-testing, earlier. Misread: slow down on the stem and look for EXCEPT and NOT. Out of time: practice timed sets. Studied the wrong things: use the Reading Guide and ask your instructor what to focus on.

If your score was low, you are not out of it, but this is the moment to act. Go to student hours with a specific question, try an SI session, and talk to your instructor about a plan. It is very hard to recover from a low test grade if you wait.

A&P in action

Say you missed a question on bone growth. Was it the difference between interstitial growth (growing longer at the epiphyseal plate) and appositional growth (growing wider at the surface)? That is a "did not know it" miss, and it is fixable with a two-column flashcard and a sketch of a long bone.

Smart AI move

A good use: describe your own error pattern (no grades or names) and ask AI for three study habits that target it. A bad use: asking AI to argue your grade.

Check yourself

You missed several questions you actually knew because you misread them. What is the best fix?

  1. Study more content
  2. Slow down on the stem and underline words like EXCEPT and NOT
  3. Change all your answers at the end
  4. Skip long questions

A misreading problem needs a reading fix, not more content.

When is the best time to visit student hours after a low exam score?

  1. Right before the final
  2. This week, with a specific question
  3. Never, it is too late
  4. Only if the instructor emails you

Early help with a specific question gives you the most time to recover.
