Week 5 of 15Build your system

Exam Week

Walk in prepared, calm, and with a plan for every question.

In BIO 243 around now

Exam 1 often falls this week. It is multiple choice and covers the first four chapters (intro and terminology, chemistry, cells, tissues). Some questions come straight from the Reading Guide content.

The big idea

On exam day, the work is mostly done. What is left is strategy and nerves. For multiple choice: read the whole stem, predict the answer before you look at the options, then find the match. Watch for words like EXCEPT and NOT. If a question stalls you, mark it and move on, then come back.

Feeling nervous is your body getting ready, not a sign that you will fail. A few slow breaths (in for 4, out for 6) calm your nervous system. Some students also do better after writing down their worries for a few minutes before the exam, so the worry does not take up working memory during the test.

And sleep. A full night of sleep before the exam helps your brain lock in what you studied. An all-nighter trades memory for panic.

A&P in action

Practice the predict-first habit: "Which tissue type lines the inside of blood vessels?" Before looking at options, predict: simple squamous epithelium (endothelium), because it is thin for diffusion. Now if you see it in the list, you can choose with confidence instead of being pulled by options that only sound familiar.

Smart AI move

Use AI before the exam, never during it. Using any outside source or device during a test is cheating under the syllabus.

Check yourself

You hit a question you cannot answer. What should you do?

  1. Stay on it until you get it
  2. Mark it, move on, and come back
  3. Leave the exam early
  4. Guess the longest answer

Moving on protects your time and often later questions jog your memory.

What is the best plan for the night before an exam?

  1. Stay up studying new material
  2. Light review of your brain dump, then a full night of sleep
  3. No review at all, just energy drinks
  4. Start the Reading Guide

Sleep helps consolidate what you studied; cramming new material late adds stress and costs memory.

Reflect

How did you feel the morning of the exam? What helped, and what would you change for Exam 2?
